The first time I bought a Jaipur Razai quilt in Australia; it quickly became my all-time favorite. I was so enchanted by its colour, beauty, softness and quality that when I travelled to India, I knew I had to find another one. Little did I know “that quilt” would spark the creation of Handmaids Global Collection—A journey to share these breathtaking textiles with the world. Today, we offer not only handblocked quilts but also an array of other home linens, each piece reflecting the artistry and tradition of Jaipur.
The Heritage of Hand Block printing
Handblocked printing in India is one of the country's oldest textile traditions, dating back over 2,000 years. This ancient craft began in Rajasthan and Gujarat, where artisans carved intricate patterns onto wooden blocks and used natural dyes to stamp the fabric. The Mughal era helped to elevate the technique, as royal patronage brought attention to vibrant floral and geometric designs.
Today, block printing continues to thrive in India, with each region offering its own distinctive style and pattern. Jaipur textiles, in particular, are known for their intricate designs, rich colors and craftsmanship, inspiring not only the quilts but also a range of fabric creations.
The Art of Block Printing in India
Block printing is a meticulous process requiring precision and skill. Artisans carve designs onto wooden blocks, stamp them onto fabric, and carefully layer colors using eco-friendly dyes. Each impression is done by hand, creating a one-of-a-kind piece. The fabric panels are then sun-dried, enhancing the colors and bringing out their full richness.
Supporting Local Communities
At Handmaids Global Collection, we take pride in working with local artisans and communities in India. Each quilt supports the employment of around 15 individuals—dyers, block printers, cotton carders, and stitchers—who create the final product. These sustainable practices provide vital income for families, helping them thrive and continue their craft.
